About the Role

AT&T is also targeting a seasoned and performance-oriented Associate Director -Technology II to head a multidisciplinary group of engineers in Plano, TX. Your responsibilities in this hybrid leadership position will be to lead the architecture of, development of, and implementation of scalable enterprise apps with the latest technologies such as Java, Spring Framework, Node.js, React, AWS, and Azure.

Your role will be as a major technology leader – mentorship of engineers, DevOps pipelines, working with business stakeholders, and the highest standards of reliability, performance, and security of systems. It is an opportunity that is uncommon to influence a technology path of one of the largest telecommunications firms in the world.


Team Structure – Direct Reports

You will lead a team of 9 engineers and specialists, including:

  • 4 Lead Software Engineers
  • 2 Senior Software Engineers
  • 1 Principal Software Engineer
  • 1 Lead Quality Assurance Engineer
  • 1 Senior Tech Product Manager

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead and manage a multidisciplinary team of software developers, QA engineers, and DevOps specialists.
  • Conduct regular code reviews and mentor team members to maintain high-quality, scalable codebases.
  • Allocate resources strategically across projects using Jira and Git for version control and issue tracking.
  • Foster a collaborative, psychologically safe team culture that encourages open communication and constructive problem-solving.
  • Proactively address team conflicts through active listening, empathy, and fair resolution practices aligned with organizational values.
  • Monitor team dynamics and engage with HR when needed to support employee well-being and performance.

Architecture & Development

  • Drive the architecture, development, and deployment of scalable applications using Java, Groovy, Spring Framework, Node.js, and React.
  • Oversee design and implementation of RESTful APIs with API Gateway and microservices architecture.
  • Lead containerization efforts using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Manage CI/CD pipelines via GitHub, Maven, and Jenkins.
  • Utilize cloud technologies including AWS and Azure for scalable infrastructure.

Quality & Standards

  • Promote test-driven development (TDD) and behavior-driven development (BDD) practices across all teams.
  • Utilize testing frameworks including JUnit, Mockito, JMock, SoapUI, and Postman.
  • Ensure adherence to security standards and best development practices.

Stakeholder & Risk Management

  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Present project updates, progress, and technology strategy to senior leadership.
  • Proactively manage risks and lead incident resolution to maintain high system reliability and uptime.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Engineering or Computer Science.
  • 5 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience in a related software engineering or technology leadership role.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with Java, Groovy, REST services, Cassandra, Redis, Splunk, Grafana, Git, Jira, APIGEE, and ATG.
  • Proven experience with cloud technologies including AWS, Azure, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Proficiency with CI/CD technologies including GitHub, Maven, and Jenkins.
  • Experience with testing frameworks — JUnit, Mockito, JMock, SoapUI, and Postman.
  • Strong Unix and Linux command line skills.
  • Proficiency with HTML5, JavaScript frameworks, React, CSS3, Java, and Spring Framework.
